I need a local marine electrician, not an electronics installer. Just about everyone I talk too around here has time to install electronics but does not do battery switches, isolators, load tests, etc. They just want the gravy.

Voltage drop issue, the feed to the bus, or the bus itself, is insufficiently sized. That is, of course, assuming that you have an adequately sized battery(s) that is in good condition. Generally, a battery that runs a high amperage motor such as a windless should not also run the electronics.

The windlass should be powered by it's own feed of large diameter wire....fused at the battery of course.

Remember, wire size is based on the amperage and the distance from the battery to the load X 2 (round trip through the ground) Do not derate the ground, it should be the same size wire as the positive.

I'm pretty familiar with the basics of wiring, I just don't want to do it myself.

The boat is a 94 and I have 2 start batteries and 2 8d's
I still have not found anyone who knows enough about marine electrical to do this job. I need a new battery switch panel, charging relay-isolators, Inverter, a gen stubbed out, and a few new switch panels. It seems all those companies out there selling electronics only want to install electronics and don't like to do wiring. Last edited by fiz; 11-02-2007 at 10:27 AM. |

Is your boat on a trailer?
A friend of mine who lives in Plant City is the superintendent at what was Ratheon Air in Tampa. He wired my cat hull and did electronics systems installs for several of my friends. He does great work, is very reasonable. Let me know if you want an intro. |

I have a similar but worse problem right now. When I push the button for my jack plate it knocks out both bottom machines and my electric shifters. The shifter part is a PITA as it automatically throws the boat into nuetral no matter how fast you happen to be running at the time. My guy says it sounds like a grounding issue.
My whole boat is kinda whacked actually. Having the entire thing stripped down to zero and rewiring everything. Every hose, switch, panel, bus bar, wire and connector. Ten years has taken its toll. |

My buddy Dave Gause. He makes those Gause Built tower boats www.gausebuiltboats.com and he has some top shelf rigging guys who do exceptional work. He's not really in the rigging and repair business since he is usually a year out on orders but he hooks me up and he is only a mile or so from here.
