Hello,
From our experience, there is no spearfishing allowed in the Caymans. Yes, if you are a local resident, you may spearfish only after applying for a liscense, but you must be a local. I have put a link here for a more detailed look at rules and regs. In fact, it is illegal to import any speargun parts, GEESSHH! http://www.caymanislands.ky/activities/envirolaws.aspx Your idea of blue water hunting is a good one for the caymans, as wahoo, dolphin (dorado) and tuna can often be seen. As far as the reefs that surround Grand Cayman and Cayman Brac, it really wouldnt matter if it was legal for you or not, because it is not the norm to see any fish big enough to shoot. Years of fishing pressure (hook and line, netting and fish traps) from locals trying to feed thier families has pretty much wiped out any fish of size and I mean this with all respect to the Camanian people. Any people who have done any diving there can attest to this. It is beautiful diving, but only for the grandeur of walls or minutia maro photography. The good news is, they serve tasty cold drinks. www.extremediveadventures.com Shootit |

Are staying on Grand Cayman, Brac or Little Cayman?
BTW I saw plenty of big fish when I was there on Brac in 2006. E-mail me if you would like. |

NO big fish in the Caymans?
Where were you diving in the Tarpon pond? There are plenty of big fish in the Caymans there is just a limited area for there to actually be fish. When we were kids we used to slay the fish with gun or pole spear it didn't matter. We could swim off the house in Cayman Brac and shoot a pair of 10 lb hogfish or groupers no problem. Since there is such tight laws on spearing and fishing from shore there now in an effort to promote Scuba Diving there as many or more fish then ever there. With clear water and the drop off at 100' or less there it would be easy to wipe out the entire population of fish there with a group of good divers in only a few weeks. I miss spearing when I'm down there but it is awesome to dive in that clear water and see the big boys come in and check you out. good practice for when you get home and dive in the dirty water. We have tried to get them to let us just bluewater hunt but it is really tough. They can't see the difference and it is a losing battle. Enjoy your trip. Cameron Kirkconnell |

Our family might have been part of the reason they banned it in the first place...plenty of monster hogfish and grouper still.
Note: sometimes big fish prefer to be were rec. divers are not.
