Default so new i havent even got my spear in the water

so im new to spearfishing. i havent even tried it yet. i just bought a pole spear. i was told it would be best to start with a pole spear considering the water i will be diving in. im in northern california. what other equipment should i have besides the spear? float? float line? shock cord?

just alittle confused because i was told i dont need any of that other stuff, just the spear, but on video clips, i see people using pole spears that are attached to a float line.

to me, it seems to make more sense to have the spear attached to a line and float so if the spear shoots outa your reach, you can just grab the line as your surfacing.

I'm not familiar with California waters (aside from always being cold, Mr. Whitey, and great surf) but hopefully mnguy will chime in here since he hunts with a polespear in California.

Hey, man, just shoot me a PM with all of your questions and I'll try to tackle them the best I can. I've been diving out here since 2006 in NorCal and SoCal.
