Default Great book: Diver Down

I just re-read this book after a couple of years. It is excellent. I've been diving for 20+ years, and I still got a lot of information- even from the 2nd read.

http://www.amazon.com/Diver-Down-Rea.../dp/0071445722

It's by Mike Ange, who is the guy who writes that article where he investigates scuba accidents, changes the names and locations, and gives a description as to what happened.

This book is mostly from fatalities- and it is pretty eye-opening about all the things that can happen. From people being stupid (actually almost all of them involved some amount of 'stupid') during checkout dives, to the heart-wrenching stories of guys going down to rescue people and becoming victims themselves. Equipment failure, undeserved hits, out of air, panic, training- all these are examples of dive accidents.

Interspersed between the accidents are very nicely done technical articles from how rebreathers work, to different certification level discussions.

The thing that gets me about all these accidents is that what they are doing is *far* less strenuous than what we do every day as spearos. Only one story is about spearing-actually lobstering- and it ends that the people are okay, even though they didnt' have safety sausages, lights, and their boat drifted off.

It is a sobering read and hopefully will make you thing about the different scenarios and what you would do in the situation (or 'not do', as in follow someone into a wreck w/out a light).

At $10, it is a great read and may give you some information to save your life.

I was almost afraid to dive deep again after reading that book!
Still, I highly recommend it as well.
