High school student tries to save New Port Richey fishing buddy when boat capsizes - St. Petersburg Times

Just heard this news. Very sad story, the man that died was my pool man in Gulf Harbors. He was probably the nicest person I ever met. And he loved to fish.

I'd like to thank the high school kid who saved the other 2 guys and risked his life to try to save Rick. It seems his Spearfishing experience helped him keep calm in 4-6' seas during an emergency.

This also reiterates the lessons I thought everyone learned from the football player tragedy:
1- check and recheck the weather
2- make sure your boat is seaworthy and large enough to handle the POTENTIAL rough seas
3- make sure life jackets are easily accessible
4- tell everyone where all the safety gear is located
5- ePIRB is a must for offshore boats

Dive and boat safely everyone.

The kid is a hero, my condolences to the family and friends.
