Here are the results from this year’s FSDA Fall Freedive Spearfishing Classic. It was a challenging day with less than perfect wind and water conditions. Many of the usual attendees chose to stay at home and watch T.V. while the real thrill seekers gave it their all. Special kudos to Matt Bruekner who brought his dad and his son along with his 18 ft. homemade boat. They win the Team Hardcore category hands down. If anybody has pictures please post them here. My camera is now one with the Ocean.
1st Place = G.R. Tarr with 138.70 points 2nd Place = Ben Fertic with 96.05 points 3rd Place = Bryan Anderson with 79.6 points 4th Place = Ritchie Zacker with72.85 points 5th Place = Conner Erwin with 65.50 points 6th Place = Pitt Gills with 65.25 points 7th Place = Charlie Domson with 51.25 points 8th Place = Matt Brueckner with 22.4 points 9th Place = 3 way tie between Barret Brueckner, Bob Dyer, and Dave Butts with 20 points 10th Place = Paul Brueckner with a Big Grin on his face after spending the day with his son and grandson. Cheers to Everyone!! Let’s do it again next year…

Congrats GR on a very strong showing! And congrats to the other top finishers as well. It's cool to see some weekend warriors up there with some of the big dogs!

It's a 19' boat. It would have been crazy to try and take an 18' boat out that day.

Congrats to the winners. Conditions were very tough, and they didn't slow GR down at all. His team dove one spot, a well known wreck, the whole day!

Thank you GR and Ritchie for another well organized and fun tournament. If some of the larger tournaments could bottle up and apply the easy registration, fish categories, & weigh in/scoring that these freedive tournaments have I think it would be a win win for everyone involved. Oh and you haven't lived until you've experienced a GR-style shotgun start
![]() Conditions - rough; 2 to 3 with some 4s to keep your snorkle full. Vis - from 80 feet to 20 feet the best I saw was MAYBE 10 foot. Hitting ledges in 50 feet and not being able to see past the end of your 110 rail gun, tough. On my second drop of the day I'm hovering at 50 ft banging on my gun to bring in some fish since I couldn't see shit. A 25 lb jack strolls by and I hit him good but not good enough as I watch him sound quickly towards the bottom and the wreck at 80 feet. Before I could hit the surface I knew from the dead weight feel of my reel line that he was in the wreck, FML. After a few minutes and fighting the wreck he finally breaks free and starts to come up but manages to slide off due to my flopper not engaging right before he came into view (I had my shooting line in my hands but still couldn't see him). Check of the shooting line and shaft reveals I have a bent shaft for the day and no back up, FML. So with a bent shaft I still manage to luck into a few fish with each drop, including the sole gag grouper to be weighed in for the tournament But that gag was the winning fish for me since it was the one that put me into 3rd place and over the Great One ![]() I hope someone posts some pictures of the BEASTLY cobias that Ben Fertic, Pitt Gills, and Conner Erwin weighed in. I believe Ben's was in the mid-60s ![]() Definitely a great way to wrap up the year!! Thanks for Charile D. and Dave B. for another fun and memorable day, let's do it again soon and the next time we'll have plenty of extra shafts!! |

Congrats to all the winners-particularly Bryan and Barrett on great finishes! Ben's cobia is a monster. I sure wish I could have made the raindate.

I'll have you know I was not watching T.V. I had to take the ACT and all that I could think about during the test was how mad I was that we weren't at the classic. Looks like it was a great time.
