Default Lion Fish

Just a quick note. I know there was some posts earlier on these. My wife and I were diving due west of Ozona in about 65' feet of water. I didn't even see it until my wife pointed to a crack in the ledge..There it was wedged tight in the crack ...a lion fish. Wasn't able to get a shot. Based on what I've read thats not good news.

We found (3) around the 50-70 foot areas, off St Pete, on (3) different ledges. The ones we found were attached to the top underside of a ledge. We shot them and then sent them frozen to NOAA for examination. They can tell from the DNA where they came from and from ear bones how long they floated before they landed. More importantly they can tell what they eat. Needless to say they are bad news. They eat the juvenile grouper, hog and crabs. Good thing they taste good and that will help keep their numbers in check.

There was a Lion Fish hunt in the keys this past weekend. 500 were caught.

The first of three Keys-based lionfish derbies Saturday attracted 27 teams, which competed for cash and prizes to collect the most, largest and smallest lionfish. The winning group captured 111 lionfish.

Lad Akins, of the Reef Environmental Education Foundation, says unsuspecting pet owners are releasing the nonnative fish into the Atlantic, where they have no natural predators.
