Default Conditions out of Clearwater

Not too good. Just heard from TJ who had a fishing charter today. Flat calm but otherwise than that it was rough conditions. Water looked like coffee creamer all the way to 110'. He said you could only see the fish when they were about 3' away from the boat. Hit wrecks, big ledges, little ledges, and hard bottom but the bite was slow everywhere. Two headboats this morning who had 50 passangers each barely caught 25 fish per boat. Each managed some grunts and a few small red groupers.

I also talked to a charter guy that fished yesterday.

He went to 125 due west of JP. He said the same thing. Less than 10 feet of vis at the surface and a slow bite. He did say that the day before they had done real well on the bait stacks in the same area.

I'm loading the boat and heading to the Elbow at noon today for an overnight hook and line trip. I'll report back in on Sunday with results.

If anybody else is out there, I'm the guy in the white 23 Seacraft.

be safe.

My son and I ran out of CLW yesterday (Friday). We only ran out about 6 miles. Hit some hardbottom areas and close in artificial reefs. You could see your bait down about 2 feet, and very, very few bites.

There is a ton of grass and other storm crap in the water.

I think we are going to be fishing Sunday.

Bob

we went to the grounds.. vis was 15 foot and milky on the bottom, but shootable.. fish were on fire on hook and line.. limited out at one spot on mango's.. great friday night of fishing.. no hogs diving, some nice fat red grouper's spearing/hook and line.. and several nice red snap's diving.. grounds is shootable, but a long boat ride if you looking for clear water..

Just got cleaned up.

It was an EPIC trip. Left Jp around 2 pm and anchorred up around 5. By 10 pm, we had our limit of snapper (18 mangos and 2 stud yellowtail), our limit of ARS and half of our grouper limit.

We woke up this morning, ran in to the pipe in 150 to get our gags and one more red. We decided we really didn't need that last red and came home around 10.

Water on the Elbow was real pretty and the mangos were biting every drop almost instantly. I was really surprised there was only one other boat out there. Does anybody know who runs a little commercial boat named Bottom Scratcher? No reason, just curious. It's nice to have friends that far out. :-)

The water in 150 looks fair, but inside of 125 its a real nasty powder blue color. The good news is that it did look better on our way in this morning than it did on our way out yesterday.

Keith, thanks for the good report. Yep, it's nice having other friends within radio range when you're offshore. Those old 23' Sea Crafts ride better than some 25'-27' boats I've been on. Somebody has a yellow one on 46th ave. between Belcher and Park street on a little repair boat lot.

Keith, excellent report. I run a 23' (25' with bracket) and I am interested in doing some longer runs. What power do you and have what size fuel tank?

And thanks for the report.

I'm running a single Yamaha F250 Four stroke. Before this motor, I ran a Yamaha OX66 2 stroke. I could make the trip then, but I'm more comfortable now. I get right at 2 mpg when it's nice out. A little less when I'm stuffed with fuel, a bit more when I'm running light. My boat holds 135 gallons, just enough to get me in serious trouble one day. I stuff it FULL before I go to the Elbow. I watch the weather extremely closely and have called off more than one trip at the last minute. It's not a trip I recommend to the average boater, but I try to get out there at least once a year.

Here is why:

Sorry for the crumby pics. The camera battery died and we had to use the iPhone. Plus we were too busy catching fish to take any pictures.

Yep, that was us. I wouldn't say that you buzzed us, you passed at a perfectly respectful distance. We just stopped there for a couple quick drifts to pick up our last two gags. We couldn't get past the snapper on the Elbow and didn't have any really big baits. That only took two drifts.

Did you find any decent ARS out there? Now that they have stretched the season, I'm wondering how far I need to run.

Out of Venice Jetty, we got out to 155' Saturday. Some of the best vis ever. We could clearly see the ledge, fish from 100'. We came into 120' and vis was around 10'. The we did a quick dive on D-9 and vis was 2-3 feet on the wreck. Ended up with some mangrove snapper and AP's. Good times.

Our dive shop reported 7-8' vis at 25' today. That's a big improvement form near zero on Saturday. Shark teeth diving should be really good now that it's been stirred up.

Thanks for the correction, AJ's are closed through the end of the month. AP's (African Pompano) is open.

Just kidding by saying "buzzed".

No big ARS - up to 6-7lbs. Sows in that area are few and far between due to the pressure. Plenty of gags, reds, mangos, plus a 60lb cobe, tuna and kings. Lots of jews too. First time in that area we've been runoff by them.

Wow, tuna and cobia are a treat. The lack of surface pelagics was the only disappointment in our Elbow trip. Normally I would have stayed out there looking for a tuna, but the surface just seemed dead. No birds, no bait, nothing.

It's good to know that I don't need to go all the way out there for the ARS. Those 6 to 7 lbers suit me just fine. :-)

Thanks for the report.
