Default Cudjoe Key for lobsters?

Heading down with the wife in August to Cudjoe Key. Past few yrs we have gone down to Key West and had a blast. Accumilated some decent spots from towing snorkelers and putting in the hours on the water. This year we are mixing it up and only going as far as Cudjoe. I have ZERO spots there. Could someone shed some light on where we should start searching for lobster? Not looking for coordinates or anything, just some ballpark areas maybe. I'm guessing head into the back country a bit? Or maybe in that area you need to stay on the Atlantic side to be more productive? Please PM me if you do not wish to post on the open forum. Any help is more than I have right now! My wife is a vegetarian, so damage to the population will be very minimal! Thank You!

You can gulf side or atlantic. I was just there last week and can tell you the lobster are thick on all heads in the gulf. Pretty simple deal. Just head out kemp channel past the last island which is sawyer or johnson key and look for dark spots or if vis is good just look for the heads. I like 12-20ft and in dirtier water because they are less visible and people don't like diving deeper than 10ft. You'll see where the tide rips between islands and that will tell you where the murkier water is and usually more bugs. The atlanatic is the same thing and the big heads start right when you get out of kemp channel. All around the sea buoy is good as far as heads.

I agree with the previous poster completely. Running an extrodinary number of lobster charters in Key West every year, I can say you will for certain find more larger lobster faster running out Kemp to the gulf side. And if you feel like running about 4 miles west of Kemp, on both sides of the middle narrows are loads of small heads (can see on gps) that I rarely see anyone on. Very productive.

Great info guys! I will be trailering my 28' down. Anything a must to checkout in the area in the deeper spots? We try to at least do a day or two in the Atlantic on the reefs and deeper. Weed lines are not standard for us Tampa spearos, so it's always a welcome sight down there.

Drop jigs or live bait on the wilkes barre for monster aj's or chum them up and see how big the sharks are!
