Default OK I'm officially OVER this crap!!!!!

I remember discussing "winter" diving during the summer with a few guys. Ya it's cold but the vis gets really good and the fish are a bit slower.

WELL..... it's all BS. Winter = frigid ass water, wind every day and dirty ass conditions. On top of that the fish all go deep as hell and hole up.

If things don't change soon I'm gong to loose it!!!!!!!!!

I have always hated this time of year. You can go diving, but it's bitter cold, never real calm for more than a day, and not real clear, so I usually pass unless its exceptional.. Early spring can have its clear days, but it's still cold. I like summer any time over winter. This winter has been rainier than normal, besides the cold, so its even murkierand colder than normal.

This winter is particularly tough because we are experiencing a very strong El Nino. Cold temps, lots of rain, and a strong south westerly flow make for very dirty inshore conditions on the Gulf Coast of Florida. The water is going to be very slow to warm up so its not gonna get much better until late May or June. The last El Nino I fished commercially was 1997/98 season and it was brutal. Came very close to losing my boat and getting killed (twice) that season and I swore I would never full time fish another El Nino.........and I have not. I retired before the 2003 El Nino but that one was mild compared to 1997/1998 & 2009/2010 El Ninos.

Just think. That "ONE" time that everything lays down for a couple days and the viz comes back you will be noodling grouper(can we still even shoot em, or is the season closed for the next milennia...) at the marina dock and not even have to start the engines...

Any connection between El Nino years and the alga blooms we always call whale snot?
I still don't know why we get the slime bloom some years and not others.

J, you need to come over here. Today we had 76 degree water and 2' chop with a moderate North current and about 70' of vis. The air was in the 50s and 60s with a decent offshore breeze, so it was a bit cold when I got out before I got my parka on and behind the isinglass. However, in the water I was comfortable wearing my 3 mm.

We were talking tonight(Superbowl party) about how long the water will be cold,(planning some get-aways on the boat) and I agree with Spear One, he has much knowledge on the water. I am sure it will be cold longer than usual, and much murkier. It has been colder than the last few years. So it has to last longer. Sucks, but it's what happens. Cycles of nature. El Nino years are wet, less hurricanes, nasty winters, La Nina years are dry and more hurricanes, warmer, drier winters.. Cant win, just have to dodge the storms, and get out there when you can.

Hi Guys,
between the fishing regulations and this awful weather we are going to have to change our fishing sport to underwater basket weaving (in a pool of course). This is f****** ridiculous it's been so long i didn't just forget to dive but also to swim.
