Default Scam or not?

Quote:
I appreciate your response to my inquiry. Am interested in buying
your furniture. I would love to come check it out myself but I just
got married and am presently on honeymoon to hawaii with my wife. I
would love a surprise inclusions in our home on our return. Please do
withdraw the advert from craigslist as i don't mind adding $50 for you
to do that, so i can be rest assured that the item is held for me. I
should believe it is in good condition as stated.I will be making the
payment via a certified check or paypal, which my secretary will mail
across to you.I'll be picking the item from you with the aid of a
mover. My Mover will be coming to pick it from you once the paypal has
been cashed. Please I will need both your full name and physical
address along wiyth your phone number to issue out the payment.
Best wishes
Alex
-Broken english with generic words (furniture-not item specific, inclusions, etc)
-certified check (certified by who?)
-Paypal...can they withdraw payment
-full name and physical address with phone number
-guy is not available but is ready to pay more than asking price immediately
-uses movers

How do you think this scam would be executed?

It could just be that the Nigerian prince was finally able to find someone to help him transfer his money out of the country, and now he's looking to spend a little of it...

Scam.

It's the 'certified' check scam. The paypal thing is new, but I'm sure when it gets down to it, he'll just mail the check- which looks good, but is false.

From CL's scam page.

Quote:
distant person offers a genuine-looking (but fake) cashier's check

* you receive an email (examples below) offering to buy your item, or rent your apartment, sight unseen.
* cashier's check is offered for your sale item, as a deposit for an apartment, or for your services.
* value of cashier's check often far exceeds your item - scammer offers to "trust" you, and asks you to wire the balance via money transfer service
* banks will often cash these fake checks AND THEN HOLD YOU RESPONSIBLE WHEN THE CHECK FAILS TO CLEAR, including criminal prosecution in some cases!
* scam often involves a 3rd party (shipping agent, business associate owing buyer money, etc)

Tell him to either wait till he gets home or arrange to have one of his friends pay you cash when the movers come to pick up the furniture.

Sounds totally legit, go for it.

Had one of these retards send me a $45,000 cashier's check on Bank of America account, dropped by the bank and they confirmed it was fake. I told the "buyer" that I had cashed it and was ready to have the boat picked up, he said "they cashed it?". I responded yes, I have the cash now please come pick up the boat. They never showed, I sent him emails telling him I had bought another boat with the proceeds and really needed the room in the driveway. The scam was that he sent extra money on top of what I was asking for the boat, I was supposed to Western Union the extra money to the "driver" that came by to inspect the boat prior to pickup. Hard to believe there are some dumbasses out there that would have handed cash and the property to some complete stranger because they recieved a "cashier's check", which by the way is no longer considered certified closing funds due to scams and the fact that they can be cancelled prior to being cashed.

My neighbor in Lakeland fell for one of these scams about 4 years ago. I remember being skeptical about it when he was telling me all about it and how excited he was that he made extra money on the deal. He wired the extra money over (I think it was around $400) and the next day the banked called him - cashier's check bounced

100% a scam, We get them at the office everyday almost verbatim of your post.
Simply, put "for pick up only, local sale,no shipping" in your post and they wont waste your time.

Someone at my hunt club fell for a similar Craigslist scam - thought he was getting the deal of a century on a truck, and instead got screwed to the tune of $8,000.

Gotta feel bad for the guy for losing that much money, but then again, anyone sending that much money to a total stranger with absolutely no guarantee kinda had it coming to them.

Default PayPal it.

If he makes a PayPal deposit into your account they verify and it a done deal.
If there is a way to "game" someone with PayPal I haven't heard of it.
