Here's a good question for everybody, what big fish records(freediving) do you think could be broken in your diving areas? Just looking through the IUSA record book, there's definitely room for improvement

Setting a record would probably be easier than breaking most of the current records. I see one in particular that I believe could be broken pretty easily but I am keeping it to myself. I may have shot one better than what is posted on the site and there seems to be little desire from too many folks to better it right now. Mentioning it here might change that. BTW I know several on there that have already been applied for but not updated yet so what you see there may not be an exact indication of what you have to accomplish to get a new record set. Good luck in your WR setting goal

Why isn't Buckets sheepie listed and WTF is the deal with the differences in the two sanctioning bodies. There are "world" records for the same species by different people at different weights.

While many folks think they have seen fish bigger than those with the exception of the black grouper and the permit numbers I have never laid eyes on fish bigger than what the current records are. There is always a chance and I understand the hogfish will be updated to something like 23-24lbs soon but those numbers are waaaay up there and are approaching the limits of the species they represent.

Thanks must have missed it! I agree on the weights. Most of those are extremely large fish. I'm not saying that there aren't larger specimens out there because there are. I think the chances of finding them at the depths attainable by 90% of the freedivers is unlikely.
I now for a fact that the Hog record has been topped multiple times but never turned in. |

Freediving isnt a sport, neither is spearfishing...oh wait this is the wrong thread
![]() I personally would just be happy to see a Hog that was 21! I think that I have seen a Cobia atleast that size, but never landed one. |

Breaking the black grouper record is gonna be really hard to do without breaking the rules. Like shooting the fish in another country with a speargun. You can pretty much write off barracuda from the gulf or atlantic. They don't weigh shit for their size. The real monsters come from the pacific. Shoot the biggest one you've ever seen and your gonna be disapointed in how little it weigh's. Emil, Don't worry. Your record fish hasn't been saught after in a while.

For the gulf area, those records are up there. I could see a really good freediver getting a better Hog during the winter off some good structure. This of course would have to be with a Scuba diver spotting for the diver and giving him hints as to where the fish is chillin at.
Black grouper is gonna be hard to beat, but its possible. I know the scuba record is something like 87lbs or a little better. Warsaw is something retarded like 150!!! I seen a few records that could be broken easily if one was in the correct place at the right time. Gixxer has his eyes on a Sheepie that is a monster and could be up there pretty good. I know of a place that is holding some pretty good spanish mack's and plan on hitting a fatty by the end of the winter. |

The black grouper record is 122.4 lbs taken by Paul Renner and he also has one that went 138 lbs but was taken by another method. One of the Hell Divers shot a 275 lb warsaw years ago and it is their state record. There was one that was 338 lbs taken on the east coast that was shot something like 5 times with five different guns over a two day span.

Candles burning- any record stands to be topped- right place, right time, and lady luck...AJ, permit, sheep, cero, margate, trigger are all highly likely IMHO- others like hog, black I think would be less likely but not impossible- one things for sure as time passes it gits harder, not just b/c of hunting pressure, but regs too.
