From this summer,I had forgotten I got stung by one of these little invasive bastages.
I had just shot(freeshaft pronger) a nice gag and he holed up in a cave and thrashed up a siltstorm.I reached in and was greeted by this creature. It hurt immediately but I stayed down and shot 3 more nice fish. When I got to the surface it hurt bad. Megabeast(Tommy)put some hot water on to boil and I alternated between ice and hot water for a while til it was OK.I have since retaliated on the population polespear style.

It doesn't look bad because as soon as he got in the boat, he told me what happened and I started boiling water. The comercial boat has a gas stove, so I kept boiling water for him and he kept walking around with his hand in a pot of green water. That pot had collard greens in it from the night before, it didn't seem to hurt anything.
![]() Recently another diver kicked one while wearing open heel cressi fins and got stabbed on the top of the foot/ankle. I kept boiling water and dumping it in a 5 gallon bucket for him, while he sat with his foot in the bucket.

Only works for jellyfish, keeps the unfired nematocysts from going off. For scorpionfish and lionfish poisons, heat denatures the poison because it is a protein.

Vodka will also work for a jellyfish sting. A easy fix for jellies is vodka or urine and a rub down with your kevlar gloves and it will be good to go before you know it.
Also, are these things in the Gulf? I dont have any intenion of having one of those stings. |

I have seen lionfish in the Gulf on several breaks in the 3 to 5s. Nematocysts (sp?) are proteins but that is kinda misleading, most rednecks are made of protein and pouring vodka on the usually just makes them go off faster, try it next time you have a martini handy. Nematocysts are sensory organs and changing the media they are in can keep them from firing, uric acid, or make them fire all the way, fresh water.
The enzymes (pretty much protein, in scorpions, sting rays, lionfish and quite a few other venomous beasties can be denatured (changing the way the proteins are folded, and therefore the properties of it) by heat at low enough levels not to cook the victim in the process. Very cool pic, I hope I can avoid finding out what that feels like.

You poured boiling hot water on the hand?
I think I'd rather feel the pain from the sting for an hour or two than burn the skin off my stung appendage. |

You just want it as hot as you can stand it. For a sting ray it takes about 3 hours before the pain goes away, or at least starts to go away. Ice will make it worse. Much worse. It has the opposite effect. I have been stung in the throat by a scorpion fish and had an anaphylactic reaction, my airway was getting smaller and I had hives. They are the same family as lionfish. I have been stung bad by stingrays twice, and I used hot as I could stand water on both. One I was walking out to my boat, shuffling, and my son who was 3 at the time started swimming out with me after I started. There were many stingrays that day. I told him to swim back to shore, and he turned and started not swimming, just kind of dog paddling, so I jumped over and picked him up. Well I stomped right on a stingray and he jammed it right through my foot. I had a boat with an I/O and I unclamped the hose going into the exhaust manifold, and put it in a bucket. I got some pictures of me with my foot in the bucket driving the boat. I carry benadryl pills on the boat just incase somebody gets a scorpion fish sting. I find that once a jellyfish really gets you, not much will help, besides cleaning off the unstung stingers, and rinsing well. I really avoid the big pink ones with the long tentacles. And you are right unless there is a hot girl on the boat, no one is going to piss on my jellyfish sting! I'll take the pain.

sting treatment same as a stingray. Water as hot as you can stand until the pain clears.
They're edible & said to taste like talapia. Just avoid the spines while handling. |

I alternated between hot and cold so as to keep it numb with ice and stop the poison with hot.The water was just under scalding.I would jam my finger into the hot water until it hurt then into the cold til it was numb.Anything else did not alleviate the pain as well. The pain was just a little worse than a scorpion.Quite a bit worse than a bee.Not quite as bad as a man-o-war.
