Guys ................. RESPONSES DUE NOW !!!!!!
One of my buddies sent me this and asked me to re-post it. I am not on here much and it might already be covered but if not, it is worth posting it up.
It looks like they are trying to back door us on hogfish quota, as little as 450 fish for the ENTIRE south atlantic catch......
HERE IS THE RE-POST
Guys - We need to email SAFMC in response to the proposed hogfish regulations in Snapper Grouper Amendment 37. Some of these proposed actions are really scary and we need urgent calls and emails to SAFMC and the SAFMC staff. Here is a brief synopisis of the actions offered by Amendment 37:
- Hogfish stocks will be divided into two separate stocks for management. There will be a Florida Keys and Eastern Florida Stock (FLK/EFL) and a Georgia to North Carolina Stock (GA-NC). This proposed action could be beneficial if properly managed.
BUT it does not look like it will be properly managed due to a lack of stock assessment for the GA-NC fish stock.
- When the stocks are divided the Hogfish Stock assessment will only be applicable to the FLK/EFL stock. Thereby leaving the GA-NC stock hung out to dry with the applicatons of "best available science" to determine MSY. To determine MSY the council will use the ORCS method. ORCS = "Only Reliable Catch Statistic". In short, they have no idea what the status of the GA-NC hogfish stock is and will use inferior numbers into a model that will produce a bad result.
As a result of the ORCS method, the following Actions are proposed for GA-NC hogfish:
1 - Under Action 4, Alternative 2 - Amendment 37 would limit hogfish harvest for recs, in NC, SC, and GA, to between 459 to 510 fish TOTAL fish per year. In short, this would mean the hogfish season would shutdown each year in May. This Action designates 81.91% of the yearly ACL to commercial interest. NC alone averages nearly 12K lbs per year commercial harvest for reference. This would very much hurt the commercial interest as well.
2 - Under Action 8, Alternative 2H - Amendment 37 would increase the length limit to 20 inches fork length.
3 - Under Action 10 Alternative 2e - Amendment 37 would create a bag limit of 1 hogfish per vessel per day for recs.
These are the worst case respectively, but represents the ideas being considered.
It is imperative that we call and email SAFMC to prevent this "doomsday" scenario from happening.
Here is the schedule of events: The council will take public comment until Friday August 14 and select preferred alternatives in December. After this, they will reconvene in January with public announcement of chosen alternatives. Once the alternatives are chosen, its basically a done deal. Therefore, we need to get people to be in their ear right now.

The following is an email that I wrote to SAFMC for official comment. Please feel free to use this email, edit it, adjust, etc. and email to the following address:
The Subject line of the email has to say: Snapper Grouper Amendment 37 Scoping
I would like to voice my concern over Action 4 of the proposed scoping of Amendment 37. Alternative 2 would destroy a great fishery that has existed for years in a stable environment. I do not support cutting the recreational harvest of hogfish to 459 to 510 fish per year as proposed in Alternative 2. Especially when such restrictive management measures are not needed for an unknown stock. The GA-NC hogfish stock has existed in a stable manner for many years. These regulations simply are not needed when a fish stock is not overfished. The following are my comments for the other action items of Amendment 37.
ACTION 2 - I SUPPORT ALTERNATIVE 1 - NO ACTION
ACTION 3 - I SUPPORT ALTERNATIVE 1 - NO ACTION
ACTION 4 - I SUPPORT ALTERNATIVE 1 - NO ACTION
ACTION 8 - I SUPPORT ALTERNATIVE 2C
ACTION 9 - I SUPPORT ALTERNATIVE 2A.
ACTION 10 - I SUPPORT ALTERNATIVE 2a
