Default Prairie Dog hunting

I'm headed to SD at the end of the month to try my luck at shooting these things. I picked up a Marlin .17HMR, heavy barrel with a 40mm (3-14x, I think) Nikon scope. I want to pick up a bipod for it also. We bought 2000 rounds and had them shipped to our hunting lodge. I think we are good in that dept.

I also picked up a Mossy Oak Brush camo shirt and pants. I figure blending in in some way beats running out there in jeans and a t-shirt since the .17HMR doesn't have the best range of some of the varmint guns I've seen out there.

I may bring my 30-06 out there for some real dramatic hits.

Has anyone does this before? Any helpful hints or suggestions are appreciated.

I think Palmer and Hooker did it a couple of years ago. Make sure you eat what you kill

was just out there in Feb. you can run around in any kinda clothing it wont matter. they will come up to look around. you might have to move if you shoot out a town to much. but the ones i saw you could shot all day without moving. from 20 feet to 500 yards. the close ones we were trying with a .45acp.

Default dog down

went up to ND a few years back to cap a few prairie dogs....took a few guns...Ruger 223 bolt with massive scope and mini-14 wear the most fun. My longest shoit was around 350 yards. Few guys in the group had 17hmr....were by far the most accurate. bipod is nice also take alook at these.. http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/17038-1.html ...nice to not have to lay down all the time.....have fun and shuffle your feet....lots of rattlers when I went

The 17 HMR is one of the most scary accurate guns I have ever picked up ... it is literally a surgical instrument. And it makes no sense as all rounds that go through it are factory .... but it is handsdown one of the most accurate rifle combos I have ever picked up which I believe makes it so damn lethal.

Not that I advocate it, but.... you oughta see how a .17 hmr performs on big critters like coyotes.

I haven't sewn up a coyote hide in 3 years.

I have plenty of 7mm ammo to go around for nutria... actually using the mil dot scope for what it's meant for sounds like a plan...

I have yet to see a coyote when I have my .204, I have heard its a magnificent sight to see when you "Let all the air out" of them...

That is also on my list, I have taken them with my .22 back in the day. But that was the dead heat of summer in the mountains. Cool thing about most states is Coyotes are non-regulated. so its open season on them year round.
