Spearfishing in Tulum Mexico is great if you like fishing around reefs. The reefs here are only a few hundred yards away from the beach so you can swim there or take a boat either way. Ive been living here for two years and spearfishing for those two years so I know alot of good spots. The fish I get here are usally: Hogfish, difrent types of grouper, difrent types of snapper, tarpon, barracuda etc. We also get mahi mahi or dolphin but only from May to August. We Also catch lots of lobster, king crab and octupus.
The water and beaches here are beutifull thats one of the main reasons I came down here. the weather and waves are mostly calm all year round that sucks for surfers but its paradise for spearfishing. there are very few people here who do spearfishing. So there are plenty of really good unspioled spots to fish. I am starting a spearfishing club here in tulum with some friends and hopefully next year I will organize our first tournament. If someone in the future is coming down here or the cancun area and wants to go fishing or needs any info message me or cantact me. happy hunting |

Hi, I sent a PM.You are right about the superb fishing, I almost hate to give away one of the best kept secrets in spearfishing, in most places along the coastline the coral starts right at the sand / waterline, and best of all, virtually no fishing pressure. Be advised that Mexico has fishing regulations pertaining to non citizens concerning Mollusks and Crustaceans.
![]() ~~ Truthfully, no one cares until 'they' want to squeeze you for money. However there are ways around this much used manipulatory procedure, you can learn how to use certain techniques in order to negotiate an agreeable outcome. Useful information can be found in my new book entitled, ~~ " How to spin the ' Mordita' (the bite) to your advantage" ~ ~~ Available soon in cyberspace. Yeah, I'm teasing you! The area that I am most familiar with is the more southerly sections of the reef, the Majahual, Sian Kaan Biosphere adjacent coast. The locals can be very friendly if your approach is well orchestrated. Again, the spearfishing is astonishing, on one occasion a guy from up the beach asked me to help him with his fish trap, it was a 'weir' type consisting of a fence line running out from the shore to about 100 meters. At the end, another length of fence was constructed in a circle like a 'corral' or holding pen. The idea is that when schooling fish encounter an obstacle, they turn seaward to go around it. So when they get to the end the school is forced to swim through openings in the fencing (which are actually funnels that herd the fish into this 'pen'. The fishermen then use castnets to extract the fish. The problem this guy had was that there was a Cubera Snapper that was to large to net! He wanted me to shoot the fish because it would tear his net. Picture me surrounded by a wall of fish and when it parted, I was staring at an eye the size of a coffee cup the only gun I had with me was a ScubaPro Panther, with a 7mm shaft, I had three more weeks to go on this trip so I knew better than to skewer this pissed off monster. I heard later that a bunch of guys shot a few lengths of 'rebar' steel into the fish. I'm ready to spend the rest of the winter there!

Do you guys have any pics? |

I might look you up- I often go to Cancun in early summer. The diving down there is beautiful, though I don't see many big fish. I'm guessing Tulum is out of the way enough that it hasn't been hit hard.

I am new to this sport and could use some friendly advice. Last summer I started, while in Miami visiting my father one of his friends took me out spearing and it was love at first fish. So, over the winter I have been saving and buying my gear one piece at a time. Please let me know how I have done. 53” JBL sawed off magnum model 6W44, 36” aquatech free dive fins, SS Dive knife, and a Mares low profile mask and snorkel. The last things that I plan on getting are a rash guard and dive flag and float.
I am also going to Play Del Carmen in May to get married and plan on doing quite a bit of spearfishing any advice? I know I need a license ($30) and I have permission from the resort and that it is TSA approved for my speargun to be checked. Any places that I should add to my list of places to go while I am down there fishing related or not. |

Lantz take the ferry over to cozumel for a day. Go to eat at El morro or San Carlos, ask a cab driver and they will take you there. Both off the beaten path but the food is amazing. Also, the freediving on the other side of the island is pretty nice, not much in the way of biiiig fish but theres fish to be had. You just have to go north on the island.

Buena Ventura Diving.... small 6 pack panga with one of the best crews on the island and Ive had my best dives with them. Jorge is the divemaster and Victor the captain. Both topnotch guys, my friend Ventura owns the boat/company and runs it from his home in the states.

I'm heading to Tulum in a few days and need a local spearo to guide me. Anyone interested? I am a NYC Firefighter and don't get to spearfish often as you can imagine. I could really use some local wisdom and direction. Where to go, what to watch out for, what shop to use, what charter, etc . . .
Thanks in advance for your reply. - jason b. |
