Out here in hawaii we call them slings.. or a three prong. I used a three prong for about 2 months before i finally moved to a gun. IT good to start off with if your just looking for something basic..but dont be fooled it does require some skill to use it.. get a good six footer to start with... By the time i got done using one i was up to a 8ft sling. Just make sure that when you get one that you buy grip tape with it...

Just buy a good ol' fiberglass shaft with a decent tip. I bought my first legit setup for about $40. You can pick up a shaft at almost any dive shop for about $15, and you have the rest of the money to splurge on a good spear tip. There's no need for an expensive setup while you're "testing the waters" per se'. If you really feel the need, you can use hockey tape for grip.

Ray Odor
I just got one of his Flounder Specials and it did the job. I have always bought the fiberglass poles and usually go through about 5 a year. The tips on the fiberglass rod break off after some time. Ray's pole spear is solid aluminum with the tip screwed into the center. A little heavy but it seems bullit proof and it was only $53 shipped to the house with two tips to boot. Thanks Ray
