John, do we have a volunteer/volunteers to amend the rules and have we spoken with IUSA about our moving forward with this? We need a committee put together this week to get the ball rolling. I would like to have it up and actively accepting applications by the SPO. RT-do you want to head this up?

Thanks for the compliment Howie. Yes, I did delete the thread concerning the World records from The FRA section of Spearboard.

    A little history about this...
About a year ago I brought up the idea of making the Florida Skin Divers Association (www.divefsda.com) the sanctioning body for the Scuba spearfishing World records since there is nobody keeping real track of such a thing.
The FSDA is a Florida organization but the organization is a member in good standing of the National Underwater Society of America (USOA).
The FSDA hosts the Florida State championships of scuba and Freediving. The FSDA also is the sanctioning body for the West Coast Council spearfishing tournament series.
The FSDA is a sponsor for the Nationally recognized Ocean Pals program.
The FSDA is also one of the largest supporters of the Fishing Rights Alliance. The FRA fights for the rights and interests of spearfisherman not only around Florida but around the Country in some cases.
The FRA is growing and can certainly grow to a national organization that helps spearos on a national as well as regional and State basis.IMHO
In short, the FSDA is a well known, nationally respected organization that should have more than enough credibilty to make such a project succeed.

Anyway...a little less than a year ago I suggested this idea at a FSDA meeting when I was Vice-president. I also presented the idea in the FRA section of spearboard to solicit opinions.
Tony Grogan promptly told everyone in the section that he had already come up with this idea and he was already moving forward with it.
Well... after around 7 months of nothing from Mr. Grogan I brought it up again in the FRA section to see how it was comming along. My questions concerning the status of the program went repeatedly unanswered by Mr Grogan so I grew frustrated and deleted the thread.
I had done a lot of research at the time concerning the rules, setup, conditions and fees but unfortunately Ive forgotten most of it over the last year. Sorry all.

I really dont think this would be that difficult to do based on my recollections of my former research.
I think the first step would be to have an officer of the FSDA contact the IUSA and USOA to discuss the proposal and make sure there is no opposition. I also think it may be a good idea to see if any of the board members of the IUSA would like to be board members of the newly formed scuba records organization.
getting people involved around the country would not only give credibility to the newly formed organization but also help with proper fish identification, rules etc...

I would be happy to come to any meetings and assist in this project any way I can but I have a new baby on the way and everyone tells me my life is going to change drastically. I'm a little hesitant to take on something I cant finish.

Thanks Rich, no one will ever accuse you of not carrying your weight for the spearfishing community.

Bryan, please contact Mr. Schmidt to get involved. Louis R. should be involved in this project as well. I see that he is registered now. I don't know him personally, but I know that he would be a great asset to this project.

Guys, I'm a little behind, but I would like to help. I do believe Louisiana has the best records of any state in the Gulf South. My ol' friend Whip Mermilliod went to congress to get the rights for the divers to keep their own records approved. In most other states it is a Wildlife and Fisheries issue.

My only gig would be what the LCUDC calls leagally taken fish, the Louisiana Council of Underwater Spearfishing Clubs, and those rules could be extended to the Gulf Coast Council Rules or even more. Review this info and give me some input.

I've always dreamed of a multi state competition, I don't agree with powerheading. The program should be done by the honor system. Every spearfisherman should bring their own fish to the boat un-assisited. OK, I know I spelled that wrong.

We need to negotiate the categories.

Remember, I'm only making suggestions, I would like to hear feedback. What I am telling you does work in La. let's try to make it work 4 all....

    Thumbs up

Lou, would you please be on the committee that aproves the submissions for WR?

So far we have Ritchie Zacker. I'd like to get at least 7 people from different regions of the US and world to review them.

Anybody else have a nominee? Rob or Les from SC? Anybody from Cali? Texas? Anyplace internationally where you can spearfish with scuba?

I just got off the phone with Ritchie discussing what to do. I told him you have to start with some kind of old data, just to get started. As far as the rules we discussed that also.

Here is a copy of the Louisiana Rules for submission of a state record, they are pretty simple, if you want people to submit entries, you can't go overboard with the rules.

    http://www.helldivers.org/Top%20Ten%20Instructions.htm

Here is our state records also, in which we include the "Top Ten".

    http://www.helldivers.org/Derby%20Boards/LCUDC%20Top%20Ten.PDF

I know from previous experience there was an organization called the North American Spearfishing Records. I think we need to find these organizations and use their records as a database.

We never put much into that organization because our state records always had bigger fish than the North American records.

Most of the scuba spearing in CA is done up north in the murk looking for halibut. There is a guy on the other board who is a bigtime member of CenCal, which is the association hosting nationals this year. He does some scuba spearing for halibut and he's pretty big on all the cencal organizing and stuff. You might want to look him up for advice if you're looking for a Cali person to help out. His name is Dave Edlund on the other board.

Some areas open to suggestion now are organization name, back dating of records, cost of submission, type of award or certificate to be given upon certification of fish.

Hey dude i think that is a awesome idea. I want to help. living and diving in the oldest spearfishing club in Louisiana Sea Tigers. I have had experience on the board. I believe any club world wide that have a set of rules that states that the diver must have a catch and weight witness from a organized spearfishing club of that state or providence should be considered a vote for World record status. Please go to my sight
extremefishingcharters.com and click on spearfishing records of my state. We want dearly that our fish be recognized on the world level as any serious diver should.
