That's a good one for sure! Here's one I shot just a few days ago. Both of them together weighed 23 and change so the big boy should be in the same area. Same as you,I didn't think of it as any record so no registered scale or better pics or anything. Only reason I even know what they weighed is because I traded them for some shrimp

We have shot some sheepshead over the years. People in that area are just learning about it.

There were hardly any divers in 90's on the CBBT. I started in 1991. And I was out there 5 days a week in the summer. And I have shot them up to 18lbs before I even knew about spearfishing records. I used to shoot a ton of Cobia on the pilings between the 2nd and 3rd at that time too. There used to be so many spades on the pilings that the bridge was super saturated with them. It was fun snagging sheepshead and spadefish while it was legal. Tautog were huge then but there are still a few good ones now in certain places. Flounder now is still very good.

Yeah, I knew you dove that area a ton early on. I had a feeling you had shot plenty of the dinosaur sheeps! I haven't been up there in a good while.

Cobia are thick lately. I shot one last week and my friend shot this one this week.

Hey guys... this is my first time posting on this board.. I found this board a few days ago and have really enjoyed looking around. Here is a sheepshead I got last year with my son. It's a pretty good size fish. I am 5ft 11 and weigh 240 lbs so you can compare the size of the fish to my torso. Don't know how it compares to the record but its up there for sure. I got it freediving at night with my son. We were spearfishing our dock in NC near Bogue Inlet and we were working the neighbors docks. Got to one dock that is about 26ft deep at the end. Dove it with my flashlight and spotted this monster! came back up and told my son there was a huge sheepshead at the bottom and I would be right back. I didn't have any weights on so it was a challenge to stay on bottom to get a shot. Anyway, just before I was out of air the fish turned his side to me and I took the shot. The fish wrapped the piling with my line and I sure wasn't about to loose my gun so I just started swimming up. With the pressure of me swimming up I thought the barnacles would have cut the line but the fish came around the piling and came free. As I was swimming up I pulled the line until the spear and fish were in my hands. When I surfaced with the fish my son was shocked at the size! Sure was the biggest I have ever seen! We got back to the house took these pics and prepared it for dinner the next night. Sure was good!

Nice fish and welcome to the board! NC is a great place to spearfish, but you're a braver man than I am to freedive at night.. way too many things to go bump in the night near-shore!

It's hard to get an estimate of your fish because of the "Florida Push"

Well, it appears from the photo that that fish must be 3' long? And 50#?

BTW, for freediving, they've got a formal process for world records- the WR sheepshead is 14.99# (done this year... but the guy FP'd it in the picture, so we'll have to take his word).

lol...." florida push" Thats a new one for me! Yeah the fish is about a forearms length from my torso in both pictures. In hind site I should of measured it and weighed it. If I had to take a best guess I would say it's in the 17-18 lb range. I've caught 14 and 15 lb sheepshead on rod and reel and have citations from NC for them but this one is substantially bigger than those.

I was a little freaked at first diving at night but I figured I'm gonna be bigger than most things out there anyway. More worried about a freak jelly fish or something like that than a toothy creature. Is there something out there I should be aware of????

How do you go about a freediving record process in case I get lucky again?

Thanks for the welcome to the board! I joined in hopes of finding some buddies to spearfish with in my area. All of my fishing buddies are too chicken to get in the water with the fish. For me it kind of brings all of the things I like together (Boating, fishing, snorkling, diving, and hunting) all in one package! I dont want to go solo in case something goes wrong I don't want to rescue myself! Plus it's kind of nice to have people with similar interests doing the samething vs. talking someone into doing something they didn't want to do in the first place......

I just noticed your link to the pic of the world record fish! Nice fish but surely not the biggest I've seen or taken. How do you apply for the record for future catches?
