Default Striped Bass Spearfishing Equipment Recomendation

Hi, I've been spearfishing for a while now on Long Island New York , but mostly for smaller game (sea bass, blackfish, porgy). I'm very comfortable free diving in deeper water and have now decided its time to save up for a bigger gun, float, ect. I have done some research on guns and am wondering what is the most effective gun/set up for going after striped bass. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

What size are they? What sort of structure/bottom/environment are they in? How close do they let you get? I ask cause it would seem to me, that those factors point you to size and type of gun.

They range any wear from 10-50lbs but probably average between 15-30lbs. The bottom is semi rocky semi sandy with occasional glacial erratics and other smaller rocks spread along the bottom. They tend to be realitivly lazy fish and with visibility you could probably get any wear from 10 to 20 feet away.

Then, IMO, a 44-50" gun from most all sponsors of this board would work. Just for sake of size illustration an Ocean Rhino RX4 would be about right. That being said, it would be your preference of a wood gun, enclosed or open track made by many of the sponsors (some are custom makers like DeathStick of BlackTip), or a pipe gun like those from Mako. JBL makes both wood and pipe guns.

    Good luck.

I would suggest checking out Hammerhead spearguns Evolution 2 series around 120cm it's a solid gun and is reasonably priced, it will be my next gun when I get the funds up.

you're gonna need some punch for a stripers gill plate or head shot. I remember shooting stripers that they tend to just run and pull rather then flip out and try to hole up like tog or seabass, etc.

Look into a railgun from rob allen, or go custom with a wood gun.. i dove with a 75-100 cm gun with a reel when i lived in nj and freedove the jetties for stripers and did fine.
